Apple Updaters

Note: The updater is now integrated into iTunes 7. If you download the firmware package with iTunes7 it will be stored in the following place:
- MacOS: /Users/[USERNAME]/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates
- Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
- Windows Vista: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
It is named for example iPod_14.1.3.ipsw. The first number is corresponding to the iPod model (you can find all numbers in this table).
The .ipsw file is a .zip file. If you unpack it you will get a file called manifest.plist. and a file without extension, for example Firmware-14.5.3. The last one is the firmware image.

Older Updaters
These Updaters are for mostly Windows only. There are nearly no older updaters available in the internet for MacOS. But those which link to Apple.com are for MacOS too.
NOTE: If you have iTunes7 installed you cannot use the older updaters anymore! You will get an error message ("Invalid iPod Service") that you must use iTunes7 for updating the iPod. If you still want to use one of these updaters you have to install a version of iTunes 6 (iTunes 6.0.5 (Windows) (http://oldapps.com/download.php?oldappsid=iTunesSetup6.0.5.exe), iTunes 6.0.5 MacOSX (https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605formac.html)).
